 Course Description:

Course Description: Participants will explore strategies in environmental education (EE) programs that not only achieve educational goals, but also to result in positive environmental impacts, such as improved water quality or habitat restoration. This course will explore multiple outcomes of EE, including changes in program participants as well as changes in environmental quality. Course participants will also delve into various methods for measuring the impact of EE and engage in readings and discussions about Environmental Education theory and research on its impacts. Putting their new knowledge to work, participants will create an EE program that they will deliver to selected audiences, and will then measure the impact of the program targeting intended outcomes and desired environmental impacts.

Course Description: Introduction to the biomes, species and cultures, connected with Denver Zoo's conservation projects. Students will gain insights into Denver Zoo's conservation areas of focus and learn what makes these areas biologically unique. Participants will also engage in discussions about the political, economic and cultural climates of these areas and how these factors shape and determine Denver Zoo's conservation strategies. Particpants will examine and discuss the long-term impacts that Denver Zoo strives to achieve in these areas.

Themes:

- Investigate climate patterns and plant/animal adaptations characteristic of different biomes.

- Use wildlife on zoo grounds to investigate wildlife of the biomes on zoo grounds.

- Explore current research and conservation issues relevant to different biomes.

- Learn about current community-based conservation solutions that address relationships between local people and the environment.

Elephant Encounter

Get to know more about Denver Zoo's beloved elephants while discovering a different side of Denver Zoo's newest exhibit Toyota Elephant Passage. Participate in an elephant training session after their daily demonstration, and then go behind the scenes and gain some insider knowledge from the animal keepers who care for these unique, charismatic creatures every day.

  • Please note that because of safety regulations, guests will not receive direct contact with the elephants, but rather will get a closer look than public perspective allows with exclusive behind-the-scenes access and interactions.
  • Program registration does not include admission to Denver Zoo-admission tickets must be purchased separately.

Restrictions

  • This adventure is for guest 12 years of age and older.
  • Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Elephant Encounter will occur rain or shine.
  • Denver Zoo reserves the right to re-route or cancel any tour due to animal health or safety concerns. In the event of cancellation, efforts will be made to reschedule you on a later date.
  • Cancellation Policy: A cancellation fee of 50% will be charged for cancelling with less than two weeks notice. A cancellation fee of 100% will be charged for a missed adventure.

Hippo Meet and Greet

Meet long time Denver Zoo resident Mahali the hippo during this up close and personal experience. Participants will have exclusive access to the outdoor hippo habitat in our new encounter space, opprotunities to learn from his keepers how they are for him, and help toss food to Mahali! Do you have what it takes to hit a four foot target from just a few feet away? Start practicing your aim!

  • Please note that because of safety regulations, guests will not receive direct contact with the hippo, but rather a closer look than public perspective allows with exclusive access and interactions.
  • Program registration does not incluse admission to Denver Zoo-admission tickets must be purchased seperately.

Restrictions:

  • This adventure is for guests 10 year of age and older.
  • Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a person 16 years of age or older.
  • Hippo meet and greet will occur rain or shine.
  • Denver Zoo reserves the right to re-route or cancel any tour due to animal health or safety concerns. In the event of cancellation, efforts will be made to reschedule you on a later date.

Orangutan or Gorilla Meet and Greet

Begin your encounter with a walking history of Denver Zoo as you make your way to Primate Panorama. Then, discover the wild world of great apes firsthand from the keepers that care for these intelligent and charismatic animals. You'll have a rooftop view of the Zoo's resident orangutans that few get to experience, or perhaps participate in a training session with a gorilla behind the scenes. You ll be amazed by the secrets of their fascinating behavior as you watch the orangutans or gorillas receive their afternoon snack.

*Please note that your experience will be with a gorilla or an orangutan, and the selected animal will be surprise when you arrive for your encounter!

Penguin Encounter

Explore Denver Zoo like never before! The Penguin Encounter is a 60 minute guided tour providing guests with an intimate look at how Denver Zoo cares for these charismatic creatures and how to protect them in the wild. The encounter includes a guided tour through Denver Zoo's Bird World exhibit, behind the scenes access and an up-close encounter with one of the zoo's African Penguins.

ROADMAP: Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs

Denver Zoo developed the ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) to strengthen engagement and increase impact with guests.  The training includes exploration of: a Guest Interaction Guide, with age-appropriate tools for creating connections with guests; Program Content Standards that help focus program content; and a Program Design template, to help all program developers follow an outcomes-based process to guide the development of their programs. Through this highly interactive workshop you will discover how you can apply ROADMAP at your zoo or aquarium to better engage guests in your mission!

Open to AZA Zoo and Aquarium Educators and related staff.

Fee:  $150 per person

Price includes lunch both days, zoo exploration and attractions and all workshop materials.

Scout Night

Saturday, October 1 -- 6:30p.m. - 9:30p.m.

Advance registration is required. Tickets available until Saturday, October 1.

Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and their families are invited to the Zoo for a special after-hours event that meets scout requirements. Delve into the amazing adaptations of nocturnal animals as you watch the sunset and explore the Zoo at night. Scout Night also features up-close encounters, free carousel rides and train rides, crafts, activities, entertainment and Scout Night commemorative patches!

If you are purchasing 10 or more tickets you will receive a discounted rate of $14 per ticket; the ticket rate will automatically adjust prior to the confirmation of your purchase. Please note you will receive one ticket per person and one ticket per printed page.

Tropical Discovery Meet and Greet

For lovers of reptiles, frogs and fish! Take a one of a kind look into Tropical Discovery, home to all things slithery, slimy, and scaly. You'll be transported into an exotic rainforest habitat that is home to over 300 species and visit two different behind the scenes areas; a face to face visit with the Komodo gragons, and a second area that is the keepers choice! It may be a bird's eye look into our 16,000 Pacific Reef habitat or meeting a frog thought to be extinct in the wild, just to name a few. Each experience is different, so an adventurous attitude is recommended!

Daytime Admission Tickets

Order your online tickets, print them at home and head straight to Denver Zoo main gate for entry.

A $1 service charge will be added to the price of each ticket.

Early Care is every weekday morning your child is in camp. Early Care is between 7:30am-8:45am in the Gates Conservation Education Center at the Zoo.

Please remember to choose the same week for Early Care as your camp week.
