Are you looking for a more exclusive and in-depth look at Denver Zoo? If so, Backstage Experience is for you!

Your personal tour guide will escort you on a private visit of our Animal Ambassador areas – home to over 90 individual animals – where you might touch a turtle, spend time with snakes or be tickled by a tamandua’s tongue! This exclusive tour includes a variety of up-close encounters, followed by an animal feeding or training demonstration. Then, it’s off to meet the stars of the Wildlife Show, where you’ll go behind the scenes to see how we care for these charismatic animals. Prepare to be dazzled by the talents of exotic parrots, majestic birds of prey, and mammals both prickly and cuddly. When the entertainment wraps up there, you are free to enjoy the zoo at your leisure.

Backstage Experience Junior

This adventure is for guests of all ages.

Meet members of our charismatic Animal Ambassadors during this bite-sized Up-Close Animal Encounter   perfect for our youngest guests! You'll get face-to-face with some of our animal ambassadors, like an anteater or a tortoise, during this private tour. There are over 90 animals for the zookeepers to choose from, so you never know who you're going to meet! Spend time with our animal care staff as they show you what it takes to care for some of the animals that call Denver Zoo home. Backstage Experience Junior is an interactive and hands-on tour that s great for all-ages!

Giraffe Feeding

This adventure is for guests guests of all ages.

*PLEASE NOTE - Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a paid participant that is 16 years of age or older

Our new Giraffe Feeding will give you a chance to hand feed one of our resident giraffes. In addition to the feeding, you will have exclusive access to giraffe experts that will help you get to know each member of the herd. You will be in awe of their long necks, rough tongues and adorable ossicones. Just watch out for the drool!

Hippo Encounter

This adventure is for guests 10 years of age and older.

Meet long time Denver Zoo resident Mahali the hippo during this up close and personal experience. Participants will have exclusive access to the outdoor hippo habitat in our new encounter space, opprotunities to learn from his keepers how they care for him, and help toss food to Mahali! Do you have what it takes to hit a four foot target from just a few feet away? Start practicing your aim!

Up Close Look: Lemurs

This adventure is for guests guests of all ages.

Join us for a chance to get an in-depth look at one of the most popular animals at the zoo, lemurs! Begin by watching our resident ring-tailed and red-ruffed lemurs leap and jump in their habitat, while learning from your host about the way that Denver Zoo cares these playful primates. Then, meet up with some of the animal care staff that work with lemurs every day. During this time, you'll get the exclusive opportunity to watch one of our resident aye-aye receive a special treat. Please note that because of safety regulations, guests will not receive direct contact or behind-the-scenes access to the animals, but rather will get the opportunity to learn more about lemurs from exclusive interactions with zoo experts.

Penguin Encounter

This adventure is for guests 8 years of age and older.

Explore Denver Zoo like never before! The Penguin Encounter is a 60 minute guided tour providing guests with an intimate look at how Denver Zoo cares for these charismatic creatures and how to protect them in the wild. The encounter includes a guided tour through Denver Zoo's Bird World exhibit, behind the scenes access and an up-close encounter with one of the zoo's African Penguins.

Predator Ridge Encounter

This adventure is for guests 10 years of age or older.

Take an African safari right here in Denver by joining us on this exclusive tour. Go behind the scenes at the award winning Benson's Predator Ridge to meet some of our social carnivores. During this behind the scenes tour you will have a chance to get to know majestic African lions, playful African wild dogs, or super smart spotted hyenas. You'll learn more about these inspiring animals from the animal experts who care for them every day. Seats are limited, so sign up for this amazing opportunity today.

Rhino Encounter

This adventure is for guests 12 years of age and older.

Ever wondered what it feels like to touch two tons worth of muscle? Experience this and more as you get nose to horn with our greater one horned rhinos Tensing and Bandhu. In this adventure, your host will guide you to our newest exhibit, Toyota Elephant Passage, to meet with a keeper and learn what it takes to care for these two-ton creatures. You'll also have a chance to touch and scratch this gentle giant while he enjoys his mid-morning snack. They might look tough as a tank, however their calm and sweet nature will win you over.

Sea Lion Encounter

This adventure is for guests 8 years of age and older.

Things are about to get fishy! Have an up-close encounter with Denver Zoo s fun flippered friends, the sea lions. During up-close encounters with sea lions and intimate conversations with animal care staff, watch as their personalities overshadow their fishy breath and find a way in to your heart. 

Tiger Encounter

This adventure is for guests 12 years of age or older.

Experience The Edge Through the Eyes of a Tiger! This tour will take you behind the scenes at The Edge, Denver Zoo's Amur tiger exhibit. Participants will get an up close view of a training session with one of The Edge's resident tigers and learn from animal care experts about what they do every day to ensure that these cats receive the best care.  You ll be in awe of the amazing relationship animal care staff have with these 400 pound furry felines!

Tropical Discovery Encounter

This adventure is for guests 5 years of age or older.

For lovers of reptiles, frogs and fish! Take a one of a kind look into Tropical Discovery, home to all things slithery, slimy, and scaly. You'll be transported into an exotic rainforest habitat that is home to over 300 species and visit two different behind the scenes areas; a face to face visit with the Komodo dragons, and a second area that is the keepers choice! It may be a bird's eye look into our 16,000 gal. Pacific Reef habitat or meeting a frog thought to be extinct in the wild, just to name a few. Each experience is different, so an adventurous attitude is recommended!

Zookeeper Experience

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a zookeeper? During this Zoo Keeper Experience, participants will spend a morning with a zookeeper from our education animal division and learn what it takes to work in an animal care career. During the experience, participants will try their hand at zookeeper responsibilities by participating in two or more of the following activities:

  • Preparing animal diets
  • Helping to weigh and care for animals
  • Taking part in animal training
  • Assisting with animal demonstrations or shows
  • And of course, everyone’s favorite - cleaning!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

WHO:

  • Animal lovers ages 9-18 with a passion to learn about careers working with animals. This is your chance to delve right in and see what a Zookeeper’s day is really like!

WHAT TO WEAR

  • Closed-toed shoes, a comfortable shirt, and pants or shorts. Dress for the weather! Portions of our program may be held outside even in inclement weather.
  • Please wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty, as being a zookeeper can get messy and there is a lot of cleaning.

WHAT TO BRING

  • A water bottle, your confirmation sheet and your camera (photo opportunities will be provided).
  • Please note: The focus of the program is an in-depth exploration of a zookeeper’s job; limited direct contact with live animals will be involved.

CANCELLATION FEES

  • A cancellation fee of 50% will be charged for cancelling with less than two weeks notice. A cancellation fee of 100% will be charged for a missed program.

Zoo Discovery Lab

This event is for teens in middle school only

During this engaging program participants will practice hands on learning through enrichment creation (creating an item that enhances an animal's environment to encourage its natural behaviors), special behind the scenes tours, and will discover the many different careers in zoo animal care and how to get there. Participants will hear from zoo experts during scheduled demonstrations and participate in special behind the scenes tours all to learn about what it takes to work on the wild-side.

Career Lab

Do you have a teen wondering what it's like to work at a zoo? Check out the Career Lab program for high school students interested in participating in a career exploration at Denver Zoo. Brownie Girl Scout - Pets Bunk

Have a sleepover at Denver Zoo at a Bunk with the Beasts adventure! Scout Bunks feature all of the fun and adventure of other Bunks but are designed with activities, tours and crafts that meet badge or achievement requirements. At this Bunk, Brownie Girl Scouts will earn their Pets badge and stay overnight in Denver Zoo's onsite Gates Education Center.

*Please note: All scouts will receive Denver Zoo's Bunk with the Beasts scout patch after completing the program. Official Girl Scout Badges are not distributed by Denver Zoo.

Important information:

  • Must have at least 10 Brownies to register
  • Children must be 5+ to attend bunk
  • This bunk does not include dinner or evening snack, but will include breakfast.
  • Registered participants are free to explore the zoo on your own after the Bunk ends.
  • ONE scout leader per troop/pack is free.

Junior Girl Scout - Habitats Bunk

Have a sleepover at Denver Zoo at a Bunk with the Beasts adventure! Scout Bunks feature all of the fun and adventure of other Bunks but are designed with activities, tours and crafts that meet badge or achievement requirements. At this Bunk, Junior Girl Scouts will earn their Animal Habitats badge and stay overnight in Denver Zoo's onsite Gates Education Center.

*Please note: All scouts will receive Denver Zoo's Bunk with the Beasts scout patch after completing the program. Official Girl Scout Badges are not distributed by Denver Zoo.

  • Must have at least 10 Junior Girl Scouts to register

Scout Bunk - Africa's Pride

Cub Scouts, do you dare to sleep on the wild side at a Denver Zoo Bunk with the Beasts adventure? Scout Bunks feature all of the fun and adventure of other Bunks but are designed with activities, tours and crafts that meet badge or achievement requirements. The theme of this Cub Scouts Bunk with the Beasts is Africa's Pride. Scouts will stay overnight in Denver Zoo's onsite Gates Education Center.

*Please note: All scouts will receive Denver Zoo's Bunk with the Beasts scout patch after completing the program.

  • Must have at least 10 Scouts to register
  • Children must be 5+ to attend bunk

Group Bunk - Africa Predator Versus Prey

Have a sleepover at Denver Zoo at a Bunk with the Beasts adventure! Group Bunks are designed with activities, tours and night vision. At this Bunk, your zoo safari will bring you face to face with predator and prey! Discover their adaptations for tracking the herd or escaping the hunt. Prowl with the pride and run with the pack as you view lions, wild dogs, banded mongoose and other residents of the majestic African savanna.

*Bunk geared toward 1st through 3rd grade students. Bunk supports Colorado Academic Science Standard 2.2 for 1st grade and 2nd grade. Program doesn't adhere to 3rd grade standard.

Child: $55 per child

Adult Chaperone: $55 per adult (One adult per 10 children is free)

Group Bunk - Rainforest Wonders

Have a sleepover at Denver Zoo at a Bunk with the Beasts adventure! Group Bunks are designed with activities, tours and night vision. In this bunk you will investigate the layers of the Rainforest, as you travel from the forest floor up through the canopy. Learn about the amazing animals that inhabit dense tropical jungles, the interconnection of species, and how important conservation efforts are to these beautiful but fragile environments.

*Bunk geared toward 4th through 6th grade students.Bunk supports Colorado Academic Science Standard 2.3 for 4th grade and 2.2 for 6th grade. Program doesn't adhere to 5th grade standard.

Child: $55 per child

Adult Chaperone: $55 per adult (One adult per 10 children is free)

Family Bunk - Wild Lights, Wild Winter

Let your family be the first to experience a private evening of Zoo Lights before the event s opening weekend. Together, you will enjoy dinner, hot cocoa, and crafts and activities to warm up throughout the evening that explore how animals adapt to winter habitats. Wake up to a warm breakfast and a before-hours private tour of the zoo. This bunk experience is a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season!
